"DeLorme -- why did I wait so long?" 2010-01-30
By D. Sexton (Wisconsin, USA)
DeLorme PN-40 -- awesome GPSr! I'm an avid geocacher and have owned several GPSr over the years. I have been a Magellan user, however, Magellan's customer service/support and quality has dropped over the years. A friend bought this product so I knew he had done a thorough research of the product. This product is awesome! Its everything I need: GPS receiver, detailed MAPS (which is huge) with easy installation....I've used this and I am very, very pleased with my purchase. Glad I grabbed it when the price was a bit lower, but still a great deal especially when compaing to what Garmin or Magellan. With products like this DeLorme should gain market share quickly. They are giving users nearly everything they need in a single box and a great price. I did buy the rechargeable battery as I hate to go through batteries so much. The longevity of the batteries are not as good as my Magellan, however, I don't know that I've used it enough to grab all the energy saving features (though I have implemented one that is recommended).

"The All-In-One GPS. Great tool for Multi Uses." 2010-01-30
By Rob G (WOBURN, MA United States)
If you are familiar with handheld GPS and how to use those units, then this is very similar. For example different pages for different functions like Map page, Signal page, Compass page, Bearing and Heading page. I wish the keys were bigger, but that would sacrifice the screen size and that could always be bigger. The screen is easy to read even in bright winter sunlight (I do have a screen protector on that takes the shininess off).

I primarily bought for snowmobiling to track where I have been and to map my local club trails. I have had issues with other units where the track log fills up and stops tracking or overwrites track (not good if on unfamiliar trails; actually happened). This unit will save off the track when it is full and start a new one automatically. The flash card adds expandability, so maps can be loaded on to it so track saves have more room (tracks store on main unit memory).

The GPS driving directions are not very intuitive. I expected to be able to find a location by entering a street address and city (like marking a waypoint, a keypad displays where you can enter text). This is not the case as far as I can tell, but I have not experimented with this feature that much.

The unit locks on to satellites pretty quickly. After recording two tracks on two different weekends on the snowmobile with this unit, I reviewed the tracks in TOPO8 and found no spots where the unit lost signal and could not track. Previous different handheld units had experienced lost signal in the woods while riding the snowmobile. I will have to test again in the summer while biking when there is full foliage on the trees.

I also intend to use on my mountain bike, for hiking and maybe even in Mexico. I purchased the one year map subscription but have not tried it. I have used the NetLink feature to download free imagery of the Mt Washington area. Seems like a great concept to only get what you really need.

The data exchange is pretty straight forward with the TOPO 8 software. I have read people having USB issues and other unit issues, but I found this to not be an issue at all. I have done from two different desktops (XP Pro and Vista x64) and a laptop (Vista x64).

The TOPO 8 software is pretty good, but needs to be more like drawing software with smaller toolbars with icons. It is a vast improvement over the last version I had, TOPO USA 4 with a Magellan handheld, which crashed regularly and my routes and tracks would randomly vanish. The two together (software and PN40) are a great combo.

I have owned both Garmin & Magellan driving and handheld GPSs and have found this best for outdoor adventures. Now, I can stop the constant purchasing of different handhelds due to shortcomings with tracking capabilities, incompatible units vs. mapping software or out of date maps.

Delorme seems to have addressed all these common issues. Would buy again!

 "pn-40" 2010-01-30
By D. Menendez
The only reason I put 4 stars instead of 5, was because of the screen size. Other than that, I would give everything else 5. For the price I don't believe you can find a better GPS. A friend has a Colorado and he is even thinking about switching over.
