"Turned Out to be an older version" 2007-10-24
By James H. Robinson (Kingston Springs, TN)
This turned out to be an older (2004) version of the software. Seller's ad didn't indicate this fact. Works fine however. I've used Delorme Earthmate and Street Atlas for at least ten years now. I thought I was upgrading to a newer version.

"Ok I guess, but a little out dated now" 2007-01-05
By Simon Davison (Los Gatos, CA)
This worked fine for a few months, but the relationship to my movement and the map were never completely correct. After a while I couldn't get the GPS device to work. Not a great buy.

"Good product; can be tweaked & adapted" 2006-04-06
By Uwe R. Kackstaetter (Berthoud, CO USA)
I have used the Delorme Street Atlas 2004 and associated Earthmate GPS for the last 2 years with more positive than negative experiences (I do not care much about the voice feature). Unbeknownst to some, the receiver can be tweaked to work with other products. You can download a FREE serial emulation driver from the Delorme Website which will let you tweak USB settings to work the Delorme GPS unit with third party mapping software.

The Delorme Support Website also helps the user with installation mistakes mentioned by some reviews, as commonly indicated background programs in XP "bite" the Delorme Software Installation process. Updating the Magnetic Declination File (free from Delorme Support) will also resolve software crashes experienced by some reviewers.

For users that encounter the "driving next to the road" problem, as many reviewers mentioned, there is a "back-on-track" feature for the GPS under options. It is a quasi calibration that will temporarily fix the problem for that small part of the world. Besides, if there is a location or street naming problem, the Delorme Website has a submit errors page, so things might be corrected in future updates or as software patches!

For what its worth!

 "Almost worth the price" 2005-03-29
By Biker freak (Not of this earth)
One of my few reviews. I purchased the Earthmate GPS with Street Atlas on the recomendation of a friend. I prefer Microsoft Streets & Trips, but the GPS function of MS doesn't have the voice directions. I used the Delorme software in the past, but was never too impressed. I'm still not, but it has gotten better. The installation of the software was quick. I did try to install the serial interface, but XP crapped out, so I had to roll back to before the install. I plugged in the GPS and it worked well. From my estimations, it is well within a 10 meter variance. Fine for me, but I wouldn't trust it in the wild.

The biggest reason for requiring the GPS is for when we go RV'ing. We tow a semi-large camper, 28', and need good directions into and out of some of the smaller campgrounds. Here is a big negative of the Delorme software: it doesn't have all the campgrounds that MS S&T does. In fact, it doesn't have nearly half of them. I tested it out this past weekend on a campground we have been going to for Easter weekend for years. I set our home address as the start and scrolled down the map to the point where the campground is. When I tried to find it using the POI (Points of Interest) search, it didn't find it. This campground has been in business for years! Come on Delorme, RV'ing is a growing pasttime! At least make an effort.

All in all, until MS comes up with voice directions, I am satisfied with this product.

"Great value in GPS technology!" 2005-03-13
By TechNut (Massachusetts)
The Earthmate and Street Atlas 2005 for PC is a great value in GPS when you consider you can own it for about 100 bucks! I used my Earthmate recently on a vaca to Florida. We arrived in Tampa (my first visit there) at 11 pm, and rented a car. I fired up my laptop using Earthmate, and the program talked us flawlessly to the front door of our hotel in St Pete, about 30 miles away! It was wonderful realizing that with GPS, you are never lost! The technology is not perfect. For instance, the program gets confused at complex interchanges and cloverleafs. But it sorts itself out quickly. It's amazing the amount of street-level detail is in the program. Voice command recognition is fair. The audible direction feature is great, calling out your upcoming turns in advance. Be sure to download the updates to the program from the Delorme website before using the GPS features. If you want military-grade GPS, I guess you have to spend big bucks, but for 100 dollars, this is a fine package that will maximize your PC investment and bring GPS technology to your vehicle with accuracy rivaling the $3000 factory installed options in many luxury cars. Dont hesitate to buy this item!
