"Not hard to use at all" 2010-01-09
By EthosInFreefall (Pittsburgh, PA)
I spent a lot of time shopping for the right GPS so I read a lot of reviews at different sites. What was really frightening to me was the number of folks who really got frustrated and had problems downloading maps and transferring them to the device. I actually held off buying one for a while. When I finally chose the PN-40 it was because of the features and because everything you need apart from accessories came with it - my package included not only the software but a SD card as well which is necessary to store enough map data. When I got it, I took a deep breath and proceeded to get it set up for hiking behind the mountain where I live. It really wasn't bad at all; like any other new electronic device today it takes a little time to understand, but if you can downoad mp3s and get them onto your player, you shouldn't have any problem manipulating the software.

The software is great, and the basic maps before you use any of the optional downloadable map functions are really good; I use the basic maps a lot of the time because they are actually easier to read than the downloaded maps and they actually have more small roads and trails in my area than the downloadable maps show. When I want to see more detail I can switch on the topo or aerial photos I have downloaded. The aerial photos can slow down the drawing process on the screen a bit and if you are moving with the aerial on sometimes you can tell it is putting a strain on the computing capacity of the device. It did freeze up a couple of times, but it could be because of how I had the maps loaded; there is a decision to make about whether to transfer the map data onto the internal memory or the SD card. Maybe I got that part wrong; nevertheless, these days devices are like little computers and a reboot usually cures all ills. As with all devices that have a screen, buy a protective cover and put it on before you take it out so you don't have to worry about scratching the device's beautiful shiny screen.

I have a few of criticisms in the context of liking this product. The buttons get pressed easily so it is hard to carry around without it bouncing against itself and switching screens or making unintended track points, etc. The batteries don't last nearly as long as claimed so bring a pair of batteries for every four hours you expect to have the device on just to be safe. non-rechargeable batteries probably last longer. I read reviews of the optional rechargeable battery pack and those who used the device on long treks reported that it was no better than batteries. Fresh high quality rechargeables last longer. The optional carry pack was reported to be a tight fit so that made me not buy it because of the buttons being easily pressed. It froze and scared me a couple of times. It wouldn't turn on and lost some tracking in the middle of a hike but i knew where i was. It did some kooky things like reboot itself. Again, I think it might be the way I loaded the map data. When you remember it is a little computer these things are less upsetting. After these things happened I had no further problems with it on subsequent hikes, I just limit my use of the aerial photography which isn't so great compared to google earth anyway (I was only able to get B&W aerial for my area so I don't know if the color aerial photography is better or worse than google earth).

As far as the downloading of maps, they give you a $40 certificate to get started. That is enough to get you going trying the different kinds of maps for the area of your first trip; then you are supposed to subscribe for $29.99 a year for unlimited downloading which I think is a bargain. I use the topo maps the most. The most fun is transferring the data back to your computer when you get back into the software so you can see where you went on various kinds of maps and in 3-D. Again, the quality isn't as good as Google earth but it is useful and fun just the same.

So in conclusion, this is a great GPS if you are not the panicy type. I'm a little panicy and a little older so my getting through learning a new kind of technology for the first time wasn't so bad with this as my first GPS.

 "Delorme Pn-40 It's that and more" 2010-01-07
By Ground seek (Fenton, MO)
The Delorme PN-40 is a wonderful GPS device that has so many capabilities that I haven't even explored. The internal software and the Delorme Topo USA software are mind boggling. I haven't been able to figure how to use this much information. I'm very satisfied with mine.

Other websites are offering this product at about $400. Amazon.com saved me a substantial amount on my purchase.

 "Like the device" 2010-01-02
By Willy H (Colorado)
I've had the Delorme PN-40 for about two months and have had no trouble with it. The unit acquires signal quickly, compared to my Magellan Meridian Gold. The color display is clear albeit smaller than I would like.

Where the value comes in is with the included street maps. The maps alone are worth the price of the unit. As far as I know Delorme is the only manufacturer that includes street maps with their device.

The $30 yearly subscription is a nice option. Frankly it's not necessary unless you want the quads, hi-res, etc, maps. But come on, for $30 take the plunge and start downloading. It's nice to have the additional maps if needed, especially if spending time in the back country.

I did find a small inconvenience when driving on the freeway. I downloaded quads and the DOQQ (b&w) maps and had them active on the GPS. At times there was a substantial delay when the screen would refresh. I don't use this GPS as a road navigation unit so it's not a big deal but it would be nice to have faster updates when traveling down the road at 60mph.

The battery life could be better and I had a small hiccup when installing Topo8 on a Vista machine. I quickly found a solution on Delorme's site and was able to install the app so it wasn't a big deal.

All in all this is a great GPS. Small, great display, fantastic value on map options. Could it be better? sure. Longer battery life and a bigger display would be nice. But in my opinion those two items do not distract from the value and quality of the unit.

"Problems with PN-40 real and not exaggerated" 2010-01-01
By Kenneth Branch (Merritt Island Fl)
As a technical and computer savvy individual I expected to be able to overcome the poor user manual and complicated non-intuitive interface for loading data and maps. Was I wrong!

Something as simple as paying for and downloading a USGS quad segment proved impossible. Tried with both PN-40 connected to computer and not. I can pay for and receive download to my hard drive, but downloaded file cannot be transferred to PN-40 or SD card.

Attempts to repurchase and download with PN-40 connected always fail near the end of download. December 9, 2009 advice on their forum is a messy procedure to delete failed download from their list, buy a new download, and try again. Other downloads will not work until the failed one is removed from their list. Manual and help manuals ignore any of this

This does not work and no support over the weekend, so cannot use the unit for my trip. I would advise potential users to buy a more user friendly unit until they improve documentation to a minimal acceptable level

Early in my career I wrote user manuals for a living. Tech writers working for DeLorme should be terrified for their job.

 "You Battery Hog!!!" 2009-12-30
By C. Tiller
I bought this unit to couple with my IPhone, now I have the ultimate 1-2 punch. I have found 100% of my caches since I bought PN-40. I got a great deal only $199. The PN-40 gets me anywhere between 1-7 feet, come on you just can't beat that. If you can't find the cache with those numbers you are looking up the wrong tree"hey is that a cache!" I'm sorry, just crazy hooked on Geocaching and always looking(smile). Why this unit did not get a 5 stars was due to the battery consumption. The PN-40 EATS regular alkaline batteries for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Excellent unit a must buy! Happy Geocaching!!

PS: I have only used this unit in the winter with temperatures at 30 degrees and below hanging on the outside exposed to the snow and winds around my neck and it has never failed, tuff little bright orange cookie!
