I got this gps for my husband to use for his motorcycle. But I use it more myself for geocaching with my friends. My friend has a low end Garmin and while she is still wandering around the woods trying to find the cache, my Delorme takes me right to it. Even in heavy trees and cloud cover I have a very accurate reading. It takes a little effort to figure it out. This is the first I've had so I can't compare ease of use to others. But once you get the hang of it the features are great. And you don't have to shell out a lot of extra money for map updates. I'm having fun with my husbands Delorme.

My other backpacking GPS is a Garmin 60csx and it has a bigger screen, longer battery life, and picks up a signal in places where the PN-40 fails. *PLUS* it has a handy belt clip, and is programmable from my Mac via MacOS-based software that is much easier to use than Delorme's clunky 1980's style user interface that runs only on Windows. The PN-40 constantly irritates me because of all of those issues (small screen, short battery life, so-so reception, no belt clip, clunky programming software). So why am I carrying the PN-40 rather than the Garmin on my upcoming trip? Simple: It's the map quality, silly.
There is no comparison between the quality of Garmin's 24K vector maps and the quality of Delorme's digitized paper 24K raster maps. The Delorme maps have far more detail. Regarding the aerial photo feature, I've found that the aerial photos really aren't that useful on the Delorme's small screen especially given how much memory they use, but there are some places and circumstances -- such as following a faint trace of an old mining trail in the desert that's not on any topo -- that they can be useful. The Garmin can't do any of this. So even though the Garmin (despite its now advanced age) is otherwise a superior product, map quality means the Delorme is what ends up with its lanyard around a beltloop and stuffed into a pocket (no belt clip, remember?).

I'm at the end of week two with the PN-30. At the end of day two I would have given it zero stars. I'm not a "computer" person and was banging my head against walls trying to figure out how to use this thing and related software. Then I started to catch on. It wasn't difficult because of poor design but because it all does so much. If I can catch on, anyone can. Of particular help are the Delorme forums.
The maps supplied are superb. No paying extra for decent street maps like other units. I took advantage of the $29.95 subscription after using up the $40 certificate playing with different maps. It's a bargain and I keep finding new uses for them. My wife works with a group restoring a local creek. I was able to print out a road map showing the route of the creek. A topo quad map showing the creek and a high-resolution aerial photo map showing how most of the creek is under pavement. Very motivating for those interested in restoring the few spots where it's accessible on public land. And that project didn't even involve the GPS device.
Learning to use the GPS comes down to playing with it a lot. Pages and info can be customized easily for individual needs. Imagery like aerial photos and NOAA charts can be turned on or off. The screen is small but bright and easy to see outside. Play with it enough and the buttons are easy to use in the dark. It even shows the tide. Maps can be assembled and customized for different activities using different types of imagery. It fully supports geocaching which I didn't even know about until I got this thing. I have it with me when I walk the dog in the morning just to see how far we've gone and in the evening I often assemble and load custom maps for places I intend to go. It has become my constant companion.

I have not had this GPS for more than about 2 months, but I find it very user-friendly. To my knowledge, it is accurate, and very fast to load the satellites (even when indoors). I do not find that it "eats" batteries. I have used regular alkalines in it and found they last about 2 days with heavy use. The best I've found are the new Lithium AA's--they seem to last forever. I did buy the rechargeable lithium battery for it, but haven't tried it out yet. The only bad thing I can say about it is that the Topo8 software (for the computer)is a bear to learn how to use, but you just have to work at it (or maybe I'm just slow). Downloading maps form the DeLorme site is easy and the transfer into the GPS unit has been very smooth so far. All in all, I love the maps, the unit itself, and would recommend it to friends. Haven't had any need of customer service so far, so I really can't talk to the issue. The videos and "help" info on the DeLorme site are great though!

This has been a great upgrade from my older Magellan. This thing is very accurate, easy to use and tracks satellites very well. I highly suggest this unit, especially for the price.
