 "Not thrilled" 2010-01-11

I've been brainwashed by Microsoft. The software seemed counter-intuitive and awkward to use and learn, it was a $50 gamble. Went back to Streets and Trips. Lesson learned.

 "Florida maps are terrible/inaccurate." 2010-01-06
By John K. Schiffermuller (Florida)
I test roads for FDoT and purchased this GPS to interface with the on-board computer in my test vehicle and optimize my routing around the state. For this purpose the software is awful. It simply cannot be trusted to route me on roads that either actually exist or that go through to where Delorme says they do. All too often I find myself having to backtrack and find my own way because the software has routed me down a road that ends in a housing development or gated community or has routed me to a "road" that is, in fact a dirt drive to a private home. Addresses for hotels and businesses are frequently shown in the incorrect place on the map i.e. enter an address and where the software directs you is NOT, in fact, to that address. Sometimes the error is a few blocks, sometimes it's miles off. The software is so frequently wrong that I no longer use it to provide routing to unknown locations, but rather just to estimate travel time to a general area. I route myself by paper map and locate the spot on the screen to set an endpoint. I then drive the route that I've set by hard-copy map and ignore the attempts by the GPS to provide me with "Better" routing, which is really what the unit was purchased for.

 "Works Fine" 2009-10-10
By WILLIAM MCLEAN (Medford, OR USA)
I loaded the program into my EeePC Net Book, connected the included GPS device to a USB port, and it ran perfectly the first time.

If you have a decent laptop or Net Book this is a great buy - especially at the reduced price I paid ($37.99). (Buy it, unless you actually need a newer map than 2009)

Difficult to use. Not intuitive like Microsoft's Streets and Trips. Would not recommend to anyone who wants use a simple to use laptop navigation program. Though the program has many features there is quite a learning curve to use them. I'm sorry I didn't buy a newer version of Streets & Tips.

 "Not quite a Garman" 2010-01-28
By R. Gadd (PA)
If you are looking for lake maps for this product you're out of luck. The internal memory is 528 or so and a pathetic 2gb sd card is included as well, under powered at best. If I hadn't opened it I would return it in a minute. Stupid me I thought they would have lake maps like everyone else. It took this gps????? two hours to locate satellites and it continues to indicate that you're moving when you are not, the speed indicator is just about as good as a bad guess.

By The Dude (Los Osos, Ca USA)
I thought I had done enough research .... but I didn't.

Cons:

Is NOT compatible with Mac ... you need a pc.

Base maps loaded in PN-40 just show major roads.

SD card 2g, not even close to having enough memory after upgrade could not even load up one state.

Pros:

Delorme support very good ... really tried to help.

"What I wanted and more." 2010-01-17
By Uncle M (The Old North State, US)
Allow me to preface this review with a few items:

1. Like many others I toiled in the selection between this unit and the Garmin C60xxx.

2. There seems to be many 'evangelists' touting one of these units over the other.

3. Many of the reviewers seem to start the review with "I am an Electrical Engineer...".

So with that out of the way, I am an Electrical Engineer. But regardless of that fact I have been using a Garmin ETREX Legend since 2004 for hiking and hunting. These days I do more of the latter than the former and have been using it extensively in the thick pine woods of North Carolina. So the advantage I have in terms of purchasing a GPS is a clear set of goals:

1. The ETREX simply could not handle the thick, tangled woods of the Old North State. Losing signal was practically a given.

2. Since the ETREX map is featureless, I would have to pre-plot waypoints and carry an additional map. I would rather just take the GPS and go.

3. I have used a combination of MapCard online and Expert GPS software for my mapping needs. Eastern North Carolina is hit or miss in terms of map coverage - especially quad topo maps.

After reading many reviews about the PN-40 vs. the CS60, price and the included Topo software won me out. Suffice to say all of my new GPS goals were met or exceeded. My personal experience:

-> I had heard how the Topo 8 software was clunky, bad interface, etc. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I had no real problems learning the interface. Is it a little complex? Maybe, but there is also flexibility in this software that I appreciate after using the others described above. I have not used all of the included $40 for maps yet and basically have every map I need for my hunting areas. By the way, the downloading is not as bad as others have claimed.

-> I took it through the nasty, swampy, pine-riddled areas of my hunting grounds and had no problems with lost signals. Did accuracy decrease? Could have, but when I plotted my waypoints in the software they were as correct as I needed them to be. My tracks were not interrupted like they always were with the ETREX.

-> The screen was easy to read with good resolution allowing me to leave the printed map at home. The waypoint entry interface on the unit is a Garmin ripoff so that is nice. Interface over all is easy to use with the nice big buttons for my cold hands. Also I appreciate the orange color - many times putting the unit down to answer natures call and being able to see it in the leaves.

-> I had read that the PN-40 eats batteries like crazy. I was a little surprised to see the battery half gone after 1 hour in the woods. However I noticed that it was still at half by the time I left 4 hours later! Leads me to believe that the battery software meter is a little on the pessimistic side.

Are there negatives? Sure. I have some nit-picky stuff with the waypoint entry and that sort of thing. The SDHC card holder is a little on the flimsy side. Especially when you consider that DeLorme suggests putting files directly on the SDHC card via a card reader. And of course the software has some stuff that could be a little better.

I was going to give this product four stars but went with five instead to offset some of the other negative reviews out there. It exceeds my needs and look forward to using it more this spring. Next up a 16GB SDHC card for future map expansion...

"Glad we bought this one" 2010-01-10
By pebblepuppy (Missouri)
This was a gift for my husband for hiking, fishing, biking and travel.. He had been looking for one for a year, but didn't decide on one. The kids and I decided to get him one for Christmas. I did a lot of research, which I always do whenever I buy a electronic purchase. I looked at Consumer reports, online reviews, corporate websites and priced it in several stores online, and in town before buying this one from Amazon. I liked the price and the brand. I like that it came loaded with basic maps unlike some where you have to spend 100's of dollars to get the maps you want. Additional maps were more reasonably prices as well on disk or with an online subscription I ordered the battery pack, the case, extra SD memory card and the extra map set for about I would have spent on a similar unit alone if I had gone with Garmin.

It's a good size, comfortable in-hand and finds our location quickly and accurately. Sometimes the map is a little off (it may show our house on the wrong side of the street - a difference of about 20 feet) but mostly it's right on. It depends on the number of satellites available at the moment, or the weather, which hasn't been great since he got it. It has taken him a couple weeks to get the hang of it. He says the instructions aren't all that clear and were written for someone who probably had a GPS before. Learning the lingo has taken the most time. Then finding where to look in the menu has been next. He's not computer savvy but has gotten the basics down. One thing I didn't like was that the software and maps that came with it aren't compatible with my iMac, nor was it compatible with his old computer with Windows2000. We had to use another person's computer to to upload them to the unit. note: they are big files and took a quite a while on the PC we used. I have since upgraded my husband's old PC to Windows XP so he can use it for the GPS. It was WAY past due anyway.

The screen is pretty easy to read. The backlight is great, but pulls battery power of course.

Now that he has figured out the basics and downloaded the very detailed maps that he wants for the lakes, he's really excited about it and happy with the gift. He's been playing with it on trips to town and says it's right on with turn by turn directions in the car, beeping ahead of the turn to give him a heads up, even letting him know when he goes off course by a different tone, and then recalculates his route to get him back on course.

He can zoom in on his favorite fishing hole although it's been too cold (in the teens and single digits) to go there. He's really looking forward to taking it fishing on Kentucky and Barkley lakes (which are very big) which was one of the main reason that he wanted one. He wants to mark his "honey holes" so he can get back to them quickly by boat. I'm sure as soon as the weather breaks he'll be heading out to the lake, GPS in hand.

I'm looking forward to using it on hikes. I recommend taking extra batteries and buying a car charger as the batteries last 5 or 6 hours. It was a good purchase and Amazon had the best price, as usual.

"Not hard to use at all" 2010-01-09
By EthosInFreefall (New Mexico)
I spent a lot of time shopping for the right GPS so I read a lot of reviews at different sites. What was really frightening to me was the number of folks who really got frustrated and had problems downloading maps and transferring them to the device. I actually held off buying one for a while. When I finally chose the PN-40 it was because of the features and because everything you need apart from accessories came with it - my package included not only the software but a SD card as well which is necessary to store enough map data. When I got it, I took a deep breath and proceeded to get it set up for hiking behind the mountain where I live. It really wasn't bad at all; like any other new electronic device today it takes a little time to understand, but if you can downoad mp3s and get them onto your player, you shouldn't have any problem manipulating the software.

The software is great, and the basic maps before you use any of the optional downloadable map functions are really good; I use the basic maps a lot of the time because they are actually easier to read than the downloaded maps and they actually have more small roads and trails in my area than the downloadable maps show. When I want to see more detail I can switch on the topo or aerial photos I have downloaded. The aerial photos can slow down the drawing process on the screen a bit and if you are moving with the aerial on sometimes you can tell it is putting a strain on the computing capacity of the device. It did freeze up a couple of times, but it could be because of how I had the maps loaded; there is a decision to make about whether to transfer the map data onto the internal memory or the SD card. Maybe I got that part wrong; nevertheless, these days devices are like little computers and a reboot usually cures all ills. As with all devices that have a screen, buy a protective cover and put it on before you take it out so you don't have to worry about scratching the device's beautiful shiny screen.

I have a few of criticisms in the context of liking this product. The buttons get pressed easily so it is hard to carry around without it bouncing against itself and switching screens or making unintended track points, etc. The batteries don't last nearly as long as claimed so bring a pair of batteries for every four hours you expect to have the device on just to be safe. non-rechargeable batteries probably last longer. I read reviews of the optional rechargeable battery pack and those who used the device on long treks reported that it was no better than batteries. Fresh high quality rechargeables last longer. The optional carry pack was reported to be a tight fit so that made me not buy it because of the buttons being easily pressed. It froze and scared me a couple of times. It wouldn't turn on and lost some tracking in the middle of a hike but i knew where i was. It did some kooky things like reboot itself. Again, I think it might be the way I loaded the map data. When you remember it is a little computer these things are less upsetting. After these things happened I had no further problems with it on subsequent hikes, I just limit my use of the aerial photography which isn't so great compared to google earth anyway (I was only able to get B&W aerial for my area so I don't know if the color aerial photography is better or worse than google earth).

As far as the downloading of maps, they give you a $40 certificate to get started. That is enough to get you going trying the different kinds of maps for the area of your first trip; then you are supposed to subscribe for $29.99 a year for unlimited downloading which I think is a bargain. I use the topo maps the most. The most fun is transferring the data back to your computer when you get back into the software so you can see where you went on various kinds of maps and in 3-D. Again, the quality isn't as good as Google earth but it is useful and fun just the same.

So in conclusion, this is a great GPS if you are not the panicy type. I'm a little panicy and a little older so my getting through learning a new kind of technology for the first time wasn't so bad with this as my first GPS.
