 "DONT BUY IT" 2008-06-13
By James Burt (Philadelphia, PA USA)
This thing does not work!

The software is passable, but the GPS will not work. I own 4 laptops, and it only works on one out of the four. Delorme's answer? "Newer laptosps dont put out enough voltage on USB, only use it on older laptops" COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE!

No online help, no tollfree number, long times on "hold" waiting for a tech on a toll call, and after all that... the answer is "buy our bluetooth version, or use an older laptop".

"Excellent, Cheap PC GPS Device (NOT FOR MAC!!!)" 2004-02-05
By (Johnstown, PA)
A friend had this unit and I've been looking for a GPS device that uses PC mapping. Most use serial port communications, this one is better, being that it is USB and even better Bluetooth!!! I would have to agree with another review that documention is lacking for the unit, and the unit does not work with the Mac (bummer), but so far those are the only drawbacks. It accuratly told me where I was at, how fast I was going and my heading. Really slick! I drive nearly 30,000 miles each year and I am looking forwrd to driving easier with my new GPS!!

This is a must have for @$125!!

 "CAN'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT !!!!!" 2003-04-27
By John R. Schmdit (Langhorne, PA United States)
I have had this for about 2 years and I travel about 100 days a year by car. I have it hooked up to my laptop, which is on the passanger seat. It has never left me down. In fact I would be lost without it, literly. I tracks where I go anywhere in the US with the existing software. Nothing else to buy !!! It pinpoints where I am at anytime. It's GREAT. If you travel a lot like me via car, and have a laptop, a VERY GOOD, AND LOGICAL PURCHASE.

 "Poor Tracking Selection" 2002-01-28
By Jim Burton (Huntington Beach, California USA)
1. The Earthmate does a very poor job of maintaining the track at speeds above 35 MPH or with even slight interferrence from buildings, bridges, etc. Before the Earthmate I had a small Magellan GPS that cost less and did a much better tracking job. Unfortunately it was stollen out of my car (along with the car).

2. I bought the Earthmate for use with my Palm but when I upgraded to an M500, there was no adapter cable. DeLorme has still not provided one.

"Not ready for prime time" 2009-08-06
By J. Canfield (Texas)
For navigation duties in our 40' motorhome, I prefer a laptop-based GPS product - I like the large screen, large keyboard, more flexibility, and the less cost (for the application) than a dedicated device. For three years we exclusively used ALK's CoPilot which had a wonderfully intuitive and simple user interface. I went through three versions of CoPilot and was excited when CoPilot 11 was released. Excitement quickly turned to dismay when I realized ALK removed valuable features *and* it would faithfully crash every hour or two. Insult to injury when it was clear ALK apparently had no plans to release any patches for the product.

So this is the backdrop for me looking for alternative nav applications. Microsoft Streets and Trips is great for planning, but totally lame for real-time navigation. Delorme is pretty good, but hopelessly complex and the interface looks like options were scattered here and there as the application evolved. It seems to me like Delorme threw in everything anybody could possible want so it could be all things to all people.

After some hunting around on the Internet, I found iGuidance and read a hands-on review of it. It looked good enough to try out, but it has turned into quite a disappointment. For one thing, it will crash every hour or so on my laptop that faithfully runs Delorme. Route planning on iGuidance is not very flexible - it has no provision to avoid certain roads and the best you can do is to insert 'vias' like Delorme. I almost exclusively use Lat/Long for destinations since address or POIs are sometimes terribly inaccurate - unfortunately there is no way (that I found) to directly add a Lat/Long for a stop or end point.

iGuidance to me appears probably like an alpha release of the first version of CoPilot - lots of good ideas, a clean and simple user interface, but the product is not developed to the point to where it is worth $90. Not ready for the big-time at this point.

CORE FUNCTIONS

Map Controls
The maps can be controlled using a variety of methods, including the traditional push-button zooming, which drills in/out while keeping the map exactly centered. Also, holding down the left mouse button enables you to drag and zoom, left-to-right, across the map, and moving the mouse in the same manner but in the opposite direction zooms out.

Find
DeLorme employs several powerful search capabilities within the software. The first is a simple box called QuickSearch where you type common requests including towns, cities, lat/lons, ZIP codes, street addresses, colleges, and many more to receive the quickest possible matches. The places-of-interest search offers more advanced parameters and the advanced search is used when locating exact matches requires additional customer input.

Draw
Add MapNotes; draw your own circles, polygons, and squares; measure the area of your draw objects--even draw in your own roads and route on them--these are amazingly powerful draw tools for the money.

Info
Right-click on the map to learn more about what's underneath your cursor. Lat/Lon, names of streets and bodies of water--even local radio station information--can be viewed in this manner. Moreover, the bottom toolbar of the software displays a continuously updated readout of what's underneath your cursor.

Voice
The voice tab of the software is where you train the software to recognize your voice for issuing routing and GPS commands while tracking. Ask common questions such as "How far to my next turn?" and the software answers. Microphone recommended for optimal usage. The software also reads upcoming turn information, including the time to turn, time to finish, and name of the street to turn onto. New voice settings allow you to select how far in advance of your turn you'd like to be prompted. Voice can also be turned off if you prefer.

Netlink and Aerial Imagery
NetLink is your online link to DeLorme for free aerial imagery now included with the Street Atlas USA 2007 versions. Select your areas of interest and download only those grids to the software. Toggle the imagery on and off in a single-screen view. Add notes and draw objects to the imagery to customize lifelike views from space.

MOBILE DEVICE MAPPING

Pocket PC, Windows Mobile 5.0, and Palm OS Compatible
Included at no extra charge is the DeLorme Handheld software, which now includes support for Windows Mobile 5.0 devices. Access the maps you want from the desktop software and hot-sync to your PDA. Add a DeLorme Bluetooth GPS for use with Bluetooth PDAs and navigate wire-free.

The DeLorme handheld functionality provides address-to-address routing, spoken directions, mobile map colors to reduce in-vehicle glare, and four million places of interest. Finding what you need is easy using the powerful search capabilities. Now you have powerful desktop mapping software and PDA software all conveniently provided in one Street Atlas USA 2007 package.

Maps on iPods
Using a tool similar to how MapShare works, now you can select the maps you want from the desktop software and send them to your photo-capable iPod. These map images are static (e.g., cannot be manipulated once on the iPod) and come across in the order you select them, same as with photos. Once on your device, you can access the ones you need, when you need them. Due to the small screen size of iPods, we recommend these maps for urban walking situations where you can discretely reference the maps you need. (Not GPS compatible.)

EASE OF USE

E-Z Nav Toolbar
First introduced within the 2006 version of the software, this handy toolbar runs along the top of the interface and offers access to commonly needed routing and GPS options, especially useful for in-vehicle navigation on a laptop PC with the Earthmate GPS. New in the 2007 version--right-click on the top toolbar and select the various icons you want.

Keyboard Shortcuts
Set your own keyboard shortcut preferences for optimum control when using GPS. The key-bindings function is very powerful and advanced so you can design your ideal in-vehicle navigation solution to your personal specifications.

Right-Click Routing
The easiest way for many to create and alter routes is to use the right-click feature. Select the route on your map and add new stops or vias, delete the route, all by simply right-clicking the object of interest. You can also add your own MapNotes or view the many pre-populated tags provided by the software.

ROUTING

Routing
Create automatic routes using the quickest (time) or shortest (distance) routes. Add VIAs to force the routing to take the roads you prefer. Turn on one-way indicators; select major areas to avoid; or select roads based on driving speed preferences. Add Stops and reorganize their order and the routing automatically recalculates. Create and manage routes either in the Route tab or by right-clicking on the maps.

Add Local Roads to Routing
A DeLorme exclusive, this is the best way to update local roads when new developments are planned or added between DeLorme software releases. This tool is located within the Draw tab and lets you draw in the road segment, connecting it to another local road within the database. Assign a name, save it, and when you create automatic routes, the software is smart enough to include these new local roads in the routing calculations and also update the directions.

Personalized Routing with Address Book
Create and save commonly-used names for places you visit often, such as "home," work," or "Dad's." Once these names are assigned, the routing Starts, Stops, and Finishes also display these names making retrieval easy for repeated usage. Customize routes using your own names and save them within MapShare for others to see--they'll be amazed. You can also include up to 200 names from your address book to be recognized using this system.

MAP & TRAVEL INFORMATION

Map Data
Because all DeLorme map data is created, updated annually, and owned by DeLorme, we are able to provide many features typically reserved for expensive in-vehicle navigation systems. Free from the license restrictions and third-party dependencies of other publishers, we can also evaluate customer-submitted revisions and implement these changes after triple-checking all submissions. We currently have an enhanced commitment with staff in place to make as many customer revisions as possible.

Places of Interest (POI) Data
The DeLorme database contains over 4 million annually updated places of interest across the U.S., with additional ones in Canada, including restaurants, lodgings, gas stations, travel services, RV stops, malls, shopping--just about everything you could ever need on the road. The software settings let you choose the magnification level to display the various POIs to avoid cluttering your map views. The POIs can be accessed using the many Find capabilities or by right-clicking on the map and selecting places based on type and distance from map center.

GPS FEATURES

GPS Radar Search
Now you can travel with GPS and have the software find upcoming travel services based on their location from you. Find gas, hotels, shopping, and much more in your direction of travel and then easily make detours to these desired stops along the way. It's like having your personal travel concierge with you at all times.

Automatic Back-on-Track GPS
Using the Earthmate GPS LT-20, which turns a laptop PC into a powerful GPS navigator, it's possible to have the software offer new spoken and visual directions when you stray off course. Within the GPS tab of the Options section of the E-Z Nav toolbar, you can select or type the off-route distances you want to travel before the automatic recalculations kick in. Select short distances for city travel and longer ones for highway travel where you may exit frequently for roadside travel services.

GPS Spoken Directions
The software can offer voice directions indicating upcoming turns and street names. It also can be set up to respond to your voice and answer common travel questions--a very powerful capability for mapping software within this price category. Several different voice types are included.

PRINTING & SHARING

Print
Print crisp color or black & white maps that you control to best match what is seen on screen. Also print Travel Packages containing strip maps and directions to bring on your trip. Don't want to use a lot of ink and paper? Then print just the Turn Details which show thumbnail maps of each of the decision points along your route.

MapShare
MapShare makes it easy to share your customized maps and directions with family, friends, and business associates. You create exactly the content you want and then post within our online MapShare library, which includes private administrative tools for you to manage. Similar to some of the better online photo resources, MapShare allows you to provide controlled access to your important maps without worrying about email and spam filters.

DEMOS & TUTORIALS

Getting Started Tutorial
This tutorial provides a guided tour of the main capabilities of the software. It is also included within the software along with a comprehensive Help section with links to online discussion groups where DeLorme customers can help you.

What's in the Box?

  • Earthmate GPS LT-20 with 5' attached USB cable
  • Street Atlas USA 2007 DVD-ROM software

Street Atlas USA 2007 contains the DeLorme produced and managed United States and now also Canadian street-level network.  "Remarkable for the price" 2008-03-14
By Robert S. Mellis (Florida)
We bought this software and hardware when we moved aboard our RV motorhome. We have traveled with it for a full year -= about 10.000 miles through the Maritimes and the East Coast of the US.

The learning curve is not too difficult. But there's a lot to learn because there are so many nifty features.

I was a bit put out when we drove our motorhome along a country road that took us under a 10.5 foot bridge - an impossibility. So I visit that DeLorme factory in Maine when we passed through. I mentioned my problem to a guy behind the counter and he passed me a url --

[...]

-- that he said would provide me many possible downloads including a list of low bridges that can be downloaded into the map program. There were dozens of helpful draw programs (All the Walmarts in the US and Canada where you can park overnight for free, Cracker Barrel locations, state parks, Passport America parks (half price).... and on and on. When these were loaded into the program we really saw the usefulness of this wonderful program.

You just can't beat the value.

 "The best $ spent" 2007-07-22

We purchased this because we were going on a road trip. We drove to New Orleans and Florida and the GPS was wonderful. We were able to find hotels to stay in along the way, and also restaurants and rest stops. We would recommend it to everyone.

 "Cool!" 2007-06-10
By Michael Dolihite (Foley, AL United States)
I have used it twice and am very happy. Most of the time you have to study the manuals for two or three days but with DeLorme it was up and running with in half an hour.

Pros: Updates nicely, clear concise details and good turn notification.

Cons: Annoying when you go off course, doe not have some of the newer roads (but when the tar is still drying) and when you compare it with Mapguess and others, make sure you have your co-pilot put the maps away.

Great product, worth the price.

 "Street Atlas 2007 Review" 2007-05-31
By superbird
I am very disappointed in this product. Instead of just saying that I do not like it, I will give my reasons as to why, so that this review may help you decide. I purchased this product several weeks before a 5500 mile road trip to 9 national parks, and despite trying to figure it out for over a week, I still could become friends with this program. I have several other mapping programs, such as Garmin Mapsource, which I was able to figure out enough to plot routes and other basic things in about several minutes. This program still leaves me baffled as to how to plot our your own route, what search function to use, etc. Unfortunately, I have no GPS for these other programs.

I tried to plot my own route, with the tool that they say allows for this. I can fight it and finally get the roads I want to take on the route, but the program would also add the roads it thinks you should take, so it constantly made large loops out of one-way routes. My Garmin Mapsource program took me about 5 seconds to figure out this feature, but hours and hours later, I still can't get it to work right on this program.

The program is not UTM compatible, which is what my handheld GPS is set to, how I have my topo maps grided, as well as all of my other map programs are set to use UTM. So in order to use this program with any of my other programs, I have to switch them to Lat/Long and WGS84. Lat/Long is archaic, although still widely used. Why is there no feature for UTM on a modern program?

When you set the Center on Pointer function, it makes it very difficult to pan around to look to see what's ahead, because the program tries to return to the pointer. This requires you to turn off the Center on Pointer function, and then turn it on again when you are done looking around. This makes it very hard to use while driving. In addition, the pointer moves across the page, instead of being centered in the middle with the page moving. As a result, you can't see where you are going when the pointer gets to the edge of the screen.

I can't get the USB GPS to work with any other map program I have, despite claims that it is supposed to work. I installed the Serial Emulator, but it does not seem to make a difference. The reason I spent so much time trying to get it to work with the other programs was so I could use them instead of the Delorme program.

If you want to search for something, there are multiple search areas, so if you don't use the correct one, than you have to retype it into the next one, and on and on. Very hard to do while trying to drive.

The pointer is often off in space, so in dense urban area, its worthless because you don't know which street the pointer is supposed to be on. And the voice directions told me to go left, although looking at the map it was obvious I needed to go right, at a T, in Moab.

The map area is too small, there is too much unneeded junk on the screen that won't go away.

If you make a mistake in plotting a route, I could not figure out how to undo or erase it. Should that be a hard thing to do???

The map detail is very poor. It will not show national parks, or other significant boundaries like any $5 road map will. It was easy to find private campgrounds, but finding a public one is hard, because you have to figure out what search engine to type it into. Hard to do while driving. Thank goodness my $5 map showed campgrounds, and my free AAA CampGuide.

The GPS takes a long time to acquire satellites. My old Garmin 12XL consistently got a 3-D position fix way before this thing could.

Trying to find something using the search is ridiculous. There are to many different ways to search, and none carry over to the other, so you have to retype it all over again. And if you are driving, forget it.

So yes, it does show you were you are. But any GPS program will. This one is just way to difficult to use, not user friendly, and not very powerful. So my free AAA maps replaced this program on our trip, and I found they worked much better. If I was totally lost, I would fire up the program, see were I was at, and then turn it off and use the paper map. Too bad this program was not free, I could have used the money for a tank of gas, lunch, and a road atlas instead.

Be sure you go to delorme or search here on Amazon before purchasing 2007 because Delorme now has 2008 available WITH the GPS receiver for the same price as this product.

UPDATE:

Delorme customer service is awesome and I would give them a 5 star rate this far. They did honor an upgrade to 2008.
