I've had this unit now for several months. I needed something I could load topo maps in for off road motorcycle riding and hiking.

Pros:

- Usually links up and gets 3-D fix in about 20-30 seconds.

- Battery life seems pretty good with about five hours on a set of NiMh rechargeble AA's.

- User interface is laid out well. I can press buttons with gloves on.

- It does exactly what I needed to do, which is guide me over mountains on back roads.

- Mine came with Topo 7 software. Although 'clunkier' than using Google maps or MS Streets, it still does exactly what I needed. Makes it easy to map my route on the PC and then send it to the PN-20.

- Is definitely waterproof and shock resistant. Definitely.

Cons:

- Screen is a little small. Font size for text/menus is small. I need my glasses to read.

- Not the best for street mapping/routing on the fly (without the PC software). If your looking for a GPS unit to use mostly for street navigation, then keep on looking. This is not the droid you are looking for.

- does not play MP3s, WMAs, or other music files. Does not play videos. Will not take/make phone calls. Does not make my coffee in the morning. Does not shoot out laser-beams to destroy my enemys.

Overall if you want a tough little GPS that can guide you over back roads (mine is usually on a RAM mount on my off-road motorcycle) then this might be the ticket for you.

This device is 10x better than my old Magellan Explorist 200. More features, MUCH more intuitive than the 200, and really picks up the satellites well. They did nice job in creating a straight forward interface for the GPS. The fact that high quality topo and street maps are included makes this unit a great value for the dollar. I use it for geocaching, mark way points, and to track my mountain bike rides. If you like to geocache then you will love the fact that you can download cache coordinates directly to the GPS from the main geocache web site. I think you can only do this with Delorme and Garmin. I'm still playing with the mapping software on the PC. This software is not as intuitive as the GPS device. (Just say NO to Magellan--Just awful).

No compliants considering the price and how I use it.

I was in the market for a gps and was not sure what to buy, but after reading other reviews of the Earthmate PN-20, it seemed evident that it was the best buy. I have not been disappointed. Some have remarked that the screen draws are slow and that it takes some time to acquire a signal, but since this is my first gps, I haven't noticed. Works great for my application. I've been using it for scouting deer hunting areas. I check out the aerial photos for a likely spot, then by using the gps can walk right to it and see if it looks as good on the ground as it did from the air. It's great for marking the location of trail cams and tree stands. I'll never use plastic marking tape or "bright eyes" again. The only drawback is that if you have to power down in the woods, it is difficult for it to pick up a signal and get a fix, when you have a canopy of trees overhead. Seems to maintain a signal very well as you travel in the woods if you enter with a good 3-d fix. For the price there is nothing that compares, you don't need to purchase anything else and as some have said, with the downloadable aerial photos, it's like carrying Google earth in your hand. I highly recommend.

The DeLorme Earthmate PN-20 is an excellent little compact GPS unit. The Topo 7.0 software that came along with this unit is easy to use and is indispensible when planning a trip or marking property boundaries. I utilized the PN-20 to navigate a trip to Nevada, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico and found it to be invaluable as well as very dependable. I have also utilized this GPS out in the field to find and mark property boundaries as well as to mark points of interest on the fly which were later transferred with ease to my computer and the Topo 7.0 software. I would highly recommend this unit to anyone considering the purchase of a reasonably priced GPS with many great features.

I test roads for FDoT and purchased this GPS to interface with the on-board computer in my test vehicle and optimize my routing around the state. For this purpose the software is awful. It simply cannot be trusted to route me on roads that either actually exist or that go through to where Delorme says they do. All too often I find myself having to backtrack and find my own way because the software has routed me down a road that ends in a housing development or gated community or has routed me to a "road" that is, in fact a dirt drive to a private home. Addresses for hotels and businesses are frequently shown in the incorrect place on the map i.e. enter an address and where the software directs you is NOT, in fact, to that address. Sometimes the error is a few blocks, sometimes it's miles off. The software is so frequently wrong that I no longer use it to provide routing to unknown locations, but rather just to estimate travel time to a general area. I route myself by paper map and locate the spot on the screen to set an endpoint. I then drive the route that I've set by hard-copy map and ignore the attempts by the GPS to provide me with "Better" routing, which is really what the unit was purchased for.

Difficult to use. Not intuitive like Microsoft's Streets and Trips. Would not recommend to anyone who wants use a simple to use laptop navigation program. Though the program has many features there is quite a learning curve to use them. I'm sorry I didn't buy a newer version of Streets & Tips.

Received this as a gift for Christmas. I love it so far. Lots of bells and whistles I have not even tried. I take it on bike rides and hiking and on my ATV. Works great. I bought the extra 12volt power cable and carrying case also so it stays safe while not in use. Battery life a little short of you run with the back light on all the time so you can see the map easier in the day time.

I have had this unit for several months and utilize the tool for hiking and driving.

Many of the reviewers gripe about the learning curve of the software or the transfer speeds. I must admit that I have not scratched the surface of the functionality of software (topo 8) but it has not ceased to amaze me; but I find it intuitive and not difficult to learn by just playing around with the software... the transfer speeds take a few moments, but nothing that I would complain about.

Mapping software:

1) create shortest route via driving to trailhead

2) select a hiking route with three distinct trails

3) and quickly and easily load it onto the handheld unit

4) create a map online to send to my friends/family

usage of device:

this unit is not the best to use while driving, but it's little chirps will help you out and definitely helps out for my wife (she cannot read a map but can read the directions that it tells her -- "turn left in 2.4 miles ..."

on the trail it is really helpful, the preloaded maps already have most of the established trails and the topo software (I've found for the most part that there is no need to have the aerial maps or whatnot).

The unit on initial powerup takes a minute to three to 3d lock onto a signal, on a warm start it takes just a few moments. It usually has an accuracy of 7feet to 11 feet, occasionally it locks on a bit farther out but tends to quickly resolve to 7ft.

The unit itself can do driving directions from point a to b, but I am having issues on getting it to do a hiking directions on the fly (that is I want to hike from here to Point B on this trail -- it always just draws a straight line from current location on walking to the destination... but I haven't played around with that too much).

this thing can take a beating as well; water, falls, cold, hot and it still works.

you can also look for items of interest located near you (restaurants, inns, camp grounds , cemeteries tend to pop up a lot as well among other things)

the device will also tell you about sunset/sunrise times that can come in really handy on a hike that is taking longer than expected.

The battery life is adequate, but I find myself stocking up on batteries. that's one of my biggest gripes about the unit (but I have no baseline to compare against)

love the actual gps unit.

now once you have finished your trip and back to the software:

5) load up the actual drive/hike (plug and play here)

6) monitor average speeds, distances, elevation changes, etc

7) post your results!

great unit, I find myself doing time studies of different driving routes, comparing, the hike distances, etc. great buy, wish it had a better battery life.

I thought this GPS would be great for kayaking, until I encountered several problems, First the electronic compass worked for a few minutes. I did the calibration procedure and it worked fine--for a short time. Then it quit working--stuck on a heading (not north). I was prepared to get tech support assistance but moved on with loading the TOPO 8 DVD. It wouldn't load on my Mac computer. Tech support told me they didn't make software compatible with Mac computers. What really gripes me, all the advertisements didn't mention that up front. I mentioned this to a Delorme tech support and sales person. Delorme quickly gave me a refund.

I like the looks of this GPS. Also, a great feature of the compass is you don't have to hold the GPS horizontal for it to work. I would recommend this GPS to PC (Windows) owners. The TOPO 8 and unlimited map downloads, for a small annual fee, makes this a good buy.

This GPS is great. I have not experienced any of the problems that I read about. I got it at a great price through an Amazon 1 day sale $219.00. The software does take some time to learn but once you figure it out, it works well. The pn-40 is very accurate and it obtains a 3-D fix in just a few seconds, even inside the house. I have a Magellan and entering waypoints into it was a nightmare. This one is a snap. You can either transfer gpx files right to the unit or you can use the cursor to scroll to the coordinates and save them that way. I highly recommend this unit.

I bought this unit for my husband for Christmas. We are avid hikers/runners and spend a great deal of time on trails, some familiar some not and we've probably gotten ourselves lost a few times over the years. We have talked about getting a GPS for a while, especially once they became almost commonplace among our other trail blazers, but were a little skeptical about their utilization. After much research and reading of many reviews including consumer report I settled on the Delorme PN-40 as it came rated as one of the highest and was cheaper than the Garmin. It has certainly been easy to use from the initial download to using it for mapping our runs. It is quite portable, and we've had no problems picking up satellites. I think this is the best value for money unit out there, especially for the first time user.

This review is for the Delorme Map Library Subscription Card. I have started downloading additional charts, maps, and images to use on the computer and on the handheld pn-40. Using the software is easy. The downloads can be slow and fail ten percent of the time, but after applying all Topo version 8 fixes, download failures have almost gone away. When downloading charts you can do 5 at a time and this may be good because of the download time. A better index of charts would be helpful, but this is making my handheld GPS into a chart plotter. Over all this is a good value to go along with the Delorme software and handheld GPS.

The interface for cutting your maps makes it hard to download large areas. This is very inefficient for example with the Canadian map packages. Sure its a great deal but you have to be willing to do hours worth of work to download the maps you want. It would be nice if they just had a topo map package of Canada. That said the aerial downloads for U.S. and hi resolution city imagery are amazing.

If you could actually download the maps successfully, this would be a great deal...but Delorme seems to place a 13-20kbps limit on the download (that's in addition to the prep time required between placing the order and the data being available for download). Consider that a 35sq mi aerial set will be around 500mb, you can see how virtually unusable this service is.

Delorme support is slow and not particularly responsive. Topo USA software is a bit buggy, especially when it comes to acquiring the maps, and the SP1 they pointed me to a week after I submitted the ticket (the software didn't alert me via its update notification) didn't really fix the problem. Searches on the support site for the error messages and issues weren't very fruitful either.

This card is a one year subscription to an all-you-can-eat buffet of Delorme's on-line maps. Topo USA 8.0 National Edition has a tab in the software called NetLink which when you're connected on-line allows you to download maps from DeLorme's fabulous collection once this software license key is installed. You can choose from USGS 1:24K scanned quads, Color DOQQ Aerial Imagery, NOAA charts, SAT 10 satellite imagery, USGS DOQQ aerial imagery, and in 133 cities USGS Hi-Resolution aerial imagery. As an avid off-road adventure seeker the scanned 1:24K maps are a wonderful supplement to the included maps of Topo USA 8.0 and the black and white SAT 10 imagery helps in some complicated areas to determine the actual path of the trail. You are limited to a certain amount of area to download at a time, with my 1:24K maps I keep it down under 100 blocks of map for a reasonable download size. The downloads vary with the data type and I highly recommend a high-speed Internet connection. The same areas of the maps can be downloaded for use with the DeLorme handheld GPS systems like the DeLorme Earthmate PN-40 Handheld GPS (1:100k Topographic, Detailed Street Maps & POIs Included).

DeLorme is a map data company first and this is money well spent to get into their wealth of map knowledge.

I've been using the PN-40 during long walks with my dogs to learn its features. Regular batteries lasted about 4 walks, or about 6 hours. I bought the power kit with the rechargeable batteries to solve this problem. However, I now get only 2 walks, 3 hours total, before needing a charge. This will not be acceptable when I eventually get to longer day hikes. I'm probably doing something wrong, but I haven't found what that is yet.

The AC charger is nice as the prongs fold in. The lithium battery is useless, however...it lost 1/4 charge in less than 30 mins, and was dead within 5 hours, despite fully charging it prior to first use. So for a wall and 12v charger, $50 is overpriced. But I'm learning to expect that from Delorme.

I received a new Delorme PN-40 for Christmas (thanks, Santa!) and immediately ordered this travel kit from Amazon. While waiting on the order I used both Energizer "Industrial" alkaline batteries (one set, lasted probably 12+ hours but I didn't time it) Ray-o-vac el-cheapo batteries (lasted about 8 or so hours, again, didn't time it). But I usually use a GPS receiver while geocaching, and I'm very often in a vehicle, on an ATV, or on a bicycle. My truck and the ATV have 12V power points, so why not use them for power?

When I got the kit I immediately installed the batteries, plugged in the 110V charger, and let it sit overnight. The next morning I unplugged it and turned it on, seeing 4 green bars. Unfortunately, this had dropped to 2 yellow bars within 20 minutes, so I start checking things out. That's when I notice that the battery was only rated at 1400mAh, which is on the small side, but still should be adequate. An average rated alkaline battery can have a much higher mAh rating, and high capacity batteries can have well over 2000mAh. So possibly the battery capacity bar is based on the highest capacity battery, so even when fully charged it's slightly over half of maximum.

This was disappointing, and worth a deduct of 2 stars (from the battery life rating), but I could deal with it. I always keep several spare AA batteries to feed my flashlight and headlamp, so I'd just throw a couple extra batteries in the pack if I needed more than extended outings.

About three days after getting the kit I go on an extended geocaching outing. A little less than 300 miles driving with about 8 miles walking/biking over 26 stops. Maybe 8 hours in-vehicle and 7 hours out. While driving, the receiver was always plugged into a 12V power point. I assumed the battery would last me all day; any amount discharged while walking SHOULD have been recharged while driving to the next destination. Wrong. About 1/2 through the trip, I got a low battery warning while walking (meaning it was down to 1 bar). About 3/4 through the trip, I got a critical battery warning while walking and the receiver shut off. I replaced with a pair of alkalines from my pack and kept walking. Back at the truck I kept it turned off and let it charge to the next stop. I had enough power to last for one geocache, then it shut off again. It turns out that just because it's plugged it, the receiver is running on external power, and the battery type is set to "rechargeable", that doesn't mean the batteries are actually getting charged. They aren't running down, but they aren't filling up either. I had to work a bit to make sure the status said "charging", usually requiring shutting the unit down and re-starting. This is a more serious problem. I would have deducted far more than 1 star from the "convenience" rating, but I feel this is more of a receiver problem than of a battery/charger problem.

Ultimately, though, this is a good purchase and worth the money. It's much cheaper than buying each item individually, and if you use it a lot, it's much cheaper than buying lots of alkalines to throw away.

Pros:

- allows the use of external power while driving, even if using alkaline batteries

- reduces waste having to throw away dead batteries

Cons:

- low capacity battery

- battery sometimes doesn't charge when the receiver is running and plugged into the 12V adapter

The Device Setup Page

The Device Setup Page options let you modify the default settings on the Earthmate GPS PN-30 such as the battery type, backlight settings, and more.

System Settings
Use to update GPS settings, WAAS status, battery type, and/or USB power setting.

Use to update the device's color scheme, backlight intensity, and/or backlight timer.

Connect to Computer
Use these settings to change the USB transfer options when sending maps to the PN-30. You can choose to send maps and imagery to the PN-30's internal memory or to an SD card within the SD slot. Please note: waypoints, routes, and tracks can only be sent to the internal memory.

The Satellite Page

Once you turn on the Earthmate GPS PN-30, the Satellites Page displays. It informs you of your current GPS status, the number of satellites the Earthmate is acquiring data from, the signal strength, and the GPS accuracy (only available when a 2-D or 3-D fix is obtained).

Both the satellite constellation and the satellite signal graph display visible satellites and their number (assigned by the Department of Defense).

GPS Accuracy
This screen will display GPS accuracy, in the lower-left corner of the screen, in feet or meters (according to the preference you have set). GPS accuracy is represented on the map by a circle with a radius equal to the GPS accuracy, allowing the user to see a representation of their accuracy in relation to their map scale. The accuracy of the Earthmate GPS PN-30 is 10 meters.

To Disable GPS
There are many features on the Earthmate GPS PN-30 that do not require a GPS fix. You can turn off the GPS connection using the Disable GPS option in the Satellites menu.

The Map Page

If a 2-D or 3-D fix is obtained, the Map Page displays the map data available for your current GPS location. If a GPS fix cannot be obtained, the location of your last GPS fix displays on the map.

Map Data
Earthmate GPS PN-30 comes standard with a base map showing high-level world and mid-level U.S. coverage. The base map cannot be removed from memory.

The Compass Page

The Compass Page provides a graphic representation of a traditional floating needle compass. It displays differently depending on if you are navigating (following a route) or tracking. The compass rotates so that the heading is always up. If you are navigating, the compass displays a bearing arrow, which points in the direction of the next stop in the route.

The Trip Info Page

The Trip Info Page contains eight information fields that occupy the entire screen (three information fields display if the Earthmate is in large-text mode). Each field is customizable with one of the many available information field options.

The Find Page

You can use the Find button (the button that displays with a magnifying glass) to search for Waypoints, Points of Interest, Natural Features, Addresses, Coordinates, Streets & Trails, Cities, and more. There are two Find search options:

Find Near Map Center
Use the Find Near Map Center search option to search for categories of information (such as geographic features, waypoints, points of interest, etc.) near your current map center. The number of search results returned is based on the amount of search results available (not on distance).
Find By Name
Use the Find By Name search option to search for a specific location, such as a specific address, point of interest, etc. To narrow your search results, you can choose either the Contains or Begins with option to search for results that contain or begin with certain character(s).

The Waypoints Page

You can use the Mark button (the button that displays as a push pin) on the Earthmate GPS PN-30 to mark a waypoint at your current GPS location (or at the current cursor position if panning). Once a waypoint has been added, you can customize the waypoint name, coordinates, symbol, and comments. The device will store up to 1000 waypoints in internal memory.

The Routes Page

There are many ways to create routes on the Earthmate GPS PN-30. You can create a route:

From your current GPS location to a waypoint
From your current GPS location to a Find search result
Between two waypoints
Between two Find search results
Between a waypoint and a Find search result

Once you have created a route, view it on the map with the View option. The device will store up to 50 routes in internal memory.

Routing is possible for both walking and in-vehicle situations, using either the direct or road routing settings. On-device routing for road routes should be used for fairly short routes, with longer routes best generated on the desktop in advance and transferred to the GPS. The on-device road routing is fine for cross-town and in-state routes and includes an audible beep warning before each turn, as well as the ability to recalculate routes when you stray off course.

The Tracks Page

Earthmate GPS PN-30 is set to record GPS tracks by default. That means that the device will create a track ("breadcrumb trail") of your travels until you turn recording off. The Tracks Page lets you save, clear, or follow the current track, or view/follow an existing track. The device will store up to 10 track logs (with a 10,000 point limit each) in internal memory.

The Sun-Moon Page

Use the Sun/Moon Page to view the sunrise/sunset and moonrise/moonset information as well as the moon phase information for your current GPS location. The current date and time also display at the top of the screen. Additionally, you can adjust the date and time to view sun-moon information for other times.

The Tide Page

Use the Tide Page to view high and low tide information based on a specific time, date, and tide station.

Drawing & Symbol Sets

DeLorme includes an extensive set of symbols within Topo USA. These include symbols from the DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer series, survey symbols, cartographic symbols, as well as the ability to create your own custom symbols using the included XSym tool. Complete geocaching symbols included.

Measuring

The on-device measuring tool lets you measure individual legs or cumulative, multiple legs. Measurements can be made on any of the available data types, including the imagery layers, which allow for precise measurements of property boundaries or for measurements between waypoints. Closing a measurement polygon will report the area of the measurement.

Basic Functions

The Earthmate GPS PN-30 is a battery-powered device. It can be powered by one rechargeable Lithium-ion battery or two AA batteries (NiCd, NiMH, alkaline, or lithium). Two AA batteries are included.

On-Off
The Power button is located at the bottom-right corner of the button area. To turn on the Earthmate, press and hold the Power button for 1.5 seconds. The Satellites Page is displayed by default. To turn off the Earthmate, press the Power button and then press the ENTER button to confirm you want to turn the Earthmate GPS PN-30 off.

Button Use
The buttons on the Earthmate GPS PN-30 provide you with access to all of the functionality on the device. Each button has a unique purpose:

In/Out
The IN and OUT button lets you zoom in or zoom out on the map.
Page
The PAGE button lets you scroll through all of the enabled "Pages."
Menu
The MENU button provides access to a multitude of functionalities. Page Menus are divided into top and bottom sections that are separated by a line. The items in the top section are specific to the Page that is currently active. The items in the bottom section are standard menu options, which are available from any Page.
Find
The FIND button is labeled with a magnifying glass and lets you search for a waypoint, address, coordinate, and more. You can search for a location based on its name or its proximity to the current map center.
Mark Waypoint
The Mark button is labeled with a push pin and can be used to mark a waypoint at your current GPS location or the cursor location (if panning).
Arrow Keypad
You can use the ARROW keypad to:
- Move the map cursor left, right, up, or down
- Pan the map by moving the cursor on the edge of the map
- Highlight options in menus or lists
- Highlight characters in the keyboard screen
Enter
You can use the ENTER button to:
- Select a menu entry or on-screen button/field
- Get information about a point on the map
Power
Use the Power button to turn the Earthmate on and off, to change the backlight settings, or to reset the device

Transferring Map Data to the Earthmate GPS PN-30

The Earthmate GPS PN-30 comes equipped with an overview-level base map showing world and U.S. coverage. While this provides a great view of a large area, chances are you will want a highly detailed view of topographic and street maps for hiking, geocaching, and other outdoor activities. Those can be transferred to the Earthmate GPS PN-30 directly from the four map data discs (West, Central, East U.S. Regions, Canada & Mexico).

Storing Data on the PN-30

The Earthmate GPS PN-30 stores tracks, routes, waypoints, and the base map data in its internal memory. Maps that are transferred to the Earthmate can be saved in internal memory or on a removable SD card (even high-capacity up to 32 GB) located under the battery compartment.

I purchased my PN-30 about a month ago, and I have been finding every excuse to pull it out and use it. I'll start out with what I have found out about its ability and functions so far.

1.First Look: I was looking for a GPS unit for use in the military primarily. I studied a lot of reviews, prices and versatility. I came to the conclusion that I would end up either getting a Garmin model or the Delorme. I was looking for a gps that was under $300.00, ample memory (or at least upgradable), and good mapping software. I know there are alot of GPS units that you can purchase pre-programmed memory cards with maps already on them, but I'd rather prefer to put what I want exactly on my unit. and be able to switch them around.

2.Mapping software: The Delorme PN-30 (and apparently all Delorme PN series gps) come with the latest TOPO USA map software, and DVD software containing street and trail maps of the entire US, as well as streets, roads and POI's in Canada, and main roads in Mexico. (I have not looked at all of it yet). It is true that it takes a little bit extra to learn how to use and upload the maps to the unit, however, once you get it figured out it is very remarkable. I was also pleased that the unit came with a 2GB SD card, which can hold quite a bit of maps. The maps are very nice to look at on the unit, from black&white to color aerial imagery, as well as topographical and standard street maps. I also like the ability to layer various maps on the unit so I can see the "drawn" streets and trails over the aerial images. One thing some people complain of, or boast of, is regarding the maps that you can get online from delorme's site. You do have to pay a subscription fee of about $30.00 for a year, but you can download any of their maps and as many maps as you want. That is well worth the price considering what you get, or can get. Because you can bet I'll be downloading that $30.00 worth and then some. I would have to probably pay about $200.00 anywhere else just for the maps I have already downloaded. (Another plus to the unit was the $40.00 credit you get to purchase maps from their site just to try them out). I contacted Delorme to ask if I could use the credit for the purchase of the year subscription, but they won't let you. But, using the $40.00 credit to download some of their maps shows just how much you would spend elsewhere for such stuff. No, their maps are not overpriced just to make you think they are cutting you a break with the subscription. If you check, you'll find that Delorme has been about the best map publisher in the world. They have always produced some of the best around. Now you can get them on the web and your GPS. The Delorme maps you download are also yours to keep. they don't just disappear. Any changes made on the maps may make any you download somewhat obsolete, but having a $30.00 yearly subscription can easily fix that.

3.GPS unit: I purchased the "realtree" camo version and I quite like it. (Just a quick note: the Realtree version is unique to each unit made. that is no other realtree unit out there looks exactly like mine--I know useless info but hey...).

The unit does take a couple of minutes or so to find the satellites the first time, or if the unit has been moved a ways from the last time it was on, or if you are moving, say in a car and you just turned it on. However, I found that the unit picks up satellites within seconds, (I mean 10 to 30 seconds) if you turn it back on in the same spot, within 20 feet, from the last time it was on. I personally don't understand how some people seem to have, (or at least they say) a hard time getting satellites and tracking them. I have turned mine on in my house, (and I live in a two story house), and I can pick up satellites very quickly and with at least 10 to 12 feet of accuracy. I've done this on the first and second floor. I have also used it to geocache and my gps got me within 2 feet of the geocache. Another thing I find great is the screen. many people talk about the screen being small, but compared to many gps units, and most older ones, it is just fine. I guess if you compare it to the type you use in your car, then yeah it has a small screen, but it is a handheld unit. It wasn't designed for mounting on your dash and sitting way back in your seat and using it to navigate somewhere on the road. That being said, it does work great for road navigation, however it doesn't give you voice directions, just a subtle "whistling" like beep/s. (In my opinion I get tired of some voice telling me to turn somewhere I don't want to go or telling me in several sentences to make a u-turn). The Delorme will also ask if you want to re-calculate your route because you may have turned somewhere it wasn't telling you to turn, and therefore create a new route rather quickly. You can also tell it to get you "Back on Track" in case you have to go around some blocked road or trail and you want to return to the road/trail you started on to your destination.

4. Computer interaction: I found that my gps is very easy to link up with my PC and download, or upload any maps, routes, tracks, or waypoints. I also like how easy it is to go to the "NetLink" tab and get more maps from Delorme. I found that the unit will also act as a GPS antenna for the TOPO USA program while it is running, so if you are in some vehicle and you have your pc and gps linked and running it will show your movement on both a overhead view and 3D like view on the pc screen. Now with something like my mini pc in the car, that will give you a screen that no other gps can beat. I can't really go into all the details of the program, but believe me, it has alot to offer. You just need to check it out and learn to use it. If you're something of an avid computer user, you should be able to have some real fun with the program.

5. Contents and final thoughts: The Delorme PN-30 comes with PN series maps on DVD's (with both Topography, streets and roads, points of interest-and there are alot of them, bodies of water, public lands and much more).

A certificate for $40.00 credit to try out any maps you wish from Delorme's website. ( Their customer service is excellent by the way. They will answer any and all questions).

A USB data transfer cable for PC/GPS data exchange. (The data cable will also power the gps unit while it is attached so you won't run down the batteries. Also if you insert the appropriate re-chargeable batteries, the data cable will charge the batteries as well).

Two AA batteries.

A neck lanyard.

A 2GB SD card. (The GPS unit can handle up to a 32GB SD HC card).

A Quick Start guide.

Comprehensive User manual. (Although I will say that you need to play around with the unit for awhile to really get to know it and learn how to use it well.

TOPO USA Software.

I am really enjoying my gps unit. One other thing I forgot to mention was the battery life. I have heard several people complain of a short battery life. I don't know why that is. Perhaps they are in areas that makes it more difficult to track satellites or they have been running their units for 10 or 12 hours over several days, or they are using cheap batteries, I don't really know. I have only recently changed my batteries after over three weeks of usage consisting of three to four 20 minute road trips each week. A trip out geocaching that lasted almost 2 hours, and several times playing around with it in my house. Compared to some older units I have owned (Garmin Rino 110, 120 and eMap, Garmin 196, and a Magellan, Michelin road GPS) the battery life in this Delorme has been way better. So, my understanding is that even these people stated that using good rechargeables the power lasts much longer than standard alkaline batteries. Whatever the case. I always take an extra set with me on 1 day trips. Next time I head overseas, I plan to use this GPS unit quite extensively.

I don't want to bash other GPS units, because I believe many are really good, it just depends on what you want out of it. I will say that although I have heard that you can download 3rd party maps onto many Garmin units, I have'nt seen where it has been done. Besides, I dont know that I would trust the accuracy of the maps on the system. With the Delorme, you're getting great maps at a very reasonable price and much easier to install with accuracy that is nearly perfect.

Another nice thing is the base map of the world on the unit. Now not every road is in there, but main roads, and several cities are there as well in about every country. At least what I can see. (I've looked to see a few places in Afghanistan and Haiti).

I currently don't own or use a "vehicle" type gps, because the roads tend to change over a short time, and it seems any gps unit out there requires a rather high price to update the software at least once a year. I figure at the $30.00 a year rate, I can keep updating my maps all the time without paying anything more.

I do often use my iPhone google maps to navigate with and it works great for that. Although my phone doesn't give any voice, beeps or anything else to remind me of any upcoming turns. My PN-30 does alert me. Given that, and the nice accuracy of my gps, the Delorme does work quite nicely in my car, (even though I did state earlier that it isn't really made for that kind of usage ;-)

I think I can say that at a price of about $200.00 (plus $30.00 for the subscription), I got a great, reliable, accurate and fun to use handheld GPS. I'd say it definitely beats many units costing $100.00 and higher out there.

The pn-30 is good for back-tracking Good for basic geocaching. Not so good for multi-caches. It will only get you to the first goal. The Garmins will let you manually enter waypoint coordinates directly into the gps The Delorme does not. You would have to connect it to a computer to send new waypoints. this is no help if you are out on the trail. The maps are nice. the display is good. I do like it.

"Oregon 400t vs Delorme PN-40" 2010-03-18

I wrote a review on Amazon about the Oregon 400t. In short I really liked the feature set but found fault with the compass, issues with the battery, and the screen was HORRBLE in direct/indirect sunlight. I returned it because at the price I paid it was not worth it.

So I bought the Delorme PN-40 because the screen was said to be better and it also had a 3-axis compass (the 400t doesn't but the 450t and 550t do but are much higher priced than the PN-40).

Though the screen is somewhat smaller it looks so MUCH better in direct/indirect sunlight. I can turn the backlight completely off and it looks great. The backlight is also much brighter when you need to turn it up. No problems there.

The compass works better than the Oregon 400t being that it is a 3 axis compass. I've been out with the PN-40 four times now and one time the compass got a little 'nutty'. I did a quick calibration and it worked fine after that. The Oregon 400t went nutty on me multiple times and I simply could not trust it. Bottom line though is if you need a compass... take a real compass and only trust these things if necessary.

It comes with some coppertop batteries but I put in energizer lithium 8x batteries. The documentation says that the GPS can determine between alkaline and lithium but when I went to the battery page it said the were alkaline so I manually changed that. They worked great and I highly recommend them. I hiked 8 miles with them and it is still reporting they are full. I had issues with batteries with the Oregon 400t though most people say they work fine. I had problems within 40 minutes with coppertops and the batteries were FINE (multimeter doesn't lie).

Both GPS's have great features and this is where Garmin has something very unique. I raved in my other review over being able to put your own trail maps onto the garmin and use it for hiking. It is a cool feature and if you make it correctly can be a real benefit. You 'can' do the same thing with the PN-40 but you need to purchase their GIS software XMAP. It isn't cheap and isn't worth it just to put trail maps in.

While that is a downer, you can download a large number of map layers from Delorme such as USGS Topo, Aerial and Sat photos. I've done this and while it is probbly very useful I haven't had to resort to using it yet. I think I need to take it somewhere I am not familiar with yet to gauge its usefulness.

Geocaching: Both support geocaching and downloading GPX's from Geocaching.com out of the box. The download of individual GPX files using the Send To GPS function worked faster (or so it seemed) with the PN-40 than the Oregon. And... IF you are a paid member of Geocaching.com you can buy ($9.99) Delorme's Cache Register software. Basically this app manages your Pocket Queries (query search that contains large number of geocaches). You can download from Geocaching.com HUNDREDS of Caches into the GPS at once. It took about 2 minutes to download 500 caches from the website and put them into the PN-40. Quite nice and might be worth the $9.99 if you are a hard core into geocaching. The Cache Register software also will sync up all caches you marked as 'found' to your Geocaching.com account. The PN-40 allows you to mark a Geocache found and also allows field notes. Those too get uploaded to your account and it seems to work as advertised so far.

The user interface for the GPS isn't hard to use. Matter of fact it works like some of my older Garmins (Page goes forward, quit goes backwards). If you read the manual (and who does that?) you can find useful button/keyboard shortcuts when entering in text for Geocaching.

One neat feature the Garmin 400t had was it could show you a graph in how your hike changed in elevation on the GPS itself. The PN-40 cannot do this but you can get the exact same thing if you import your track into the included Topo software (now comes with version 8).

Speaking of the included Topo program, it actually IS a very good program but its user interface isn't the most intuitive thing to learn. If you ever used Delorme's Street Atlas it basically works the same way. I 'think' it is because Delorme makes a lot of GIS apps (like XMAP) and the interface comes from that software. GIS people think 'differently' about geospatial data and so the interface is tailored more to their liking.

If you are going to buy an Earthmate series GPS you have to get the power kit. For the dollar savings on batteries and reduced hassle factor of not having to open the unit to charge it - it is totally worth it. You can charge off a USB but the wall plug-in seems much faster. I am not sure the total life of the battery - the longest I have used it in a PN-30 is 6 hours so far.

"Finally I found a GPS that I can rely on." 2010-03-18

I have owned several GPS's over the years, some were difficult to use, one that failed when I needed it the most. I finally bit the bullet and bought the PN-40 with extra memory right after it came out. Unfortunately, I paid full price, more than it is selling for now. I have been extremely pleased with its performance. I bought the re-chargable battery pack and although the charge still doesn't last as long as the throw-away batteries, it is still convenient to plug it in either the car or home to top off the charge. Unlike the previous GPS (Magellan), this one has been extremely accurate and reliable, although, from my past experience, I still recommend you have a simple compass and a map with you as a back-up.

Just some background I had ordered the PN-40 to try it out since I was not impressed with my Garmin Dakota 20 I had just purchased. I have a review of that unit Garmin Dakota 20 2.6-Inch Touchscreen Handheld GPS Navigator there if you would like to see what I thought of that.

Pros of PN-40

1. The Screen - Even though it is small for the size of the unit and smaller than the Dakota 20 even this screen is great. It really is easy to read in sunlight. I found the more sun you had the easier it was to see. That is the translucent or transductive or some kind of technology it says. lol. But it works great. The screen being small the maps still looked like they were in HD compared to the Dakota 20 and my friends Oregon 300.

2. Construction - This thing just feels rugged. It looks totally water tight. From the screw down battery cover (no screwdriver needed)to the brass contacts used for USB (there is no USB plug it is a true CONTACT connection which adds to the water tightness)

3 Features - This interface is very simple. It is not as snazzy as some GPS I have seen but it does the job. You can route to Geocache via street turn by turn and then switch to hiking directions when you get out of the car. The paperless geocaching is excellent as well. It came with USA Topo maps and Street maps as well as street maps for Mexico and Canada as well. The other maps are available for $29 a year. Very nice compared go Garmin's per map price. I was also surprised this unit came with a 4 gig mem chip extra in the box. I had not expected that. Honestly I do not travel enough to require a larger chip for maps but it does support up to 32 gig.

Cons of PN-40

1. Battery life - This unit is only rated at 14 hours so I expect about 10 to 12 with good NiCad rechargeable. I will see though. So far I have only pushed it to 10 hours. The new Garmin lines (Dakota and Oregon) get 16 to 20 hours.

2. Compass - The unit has a 3 axis compass. The compass is electronic when you are standing still and it is GPS based when you move. I have not had any luck at all with the compass when I am standing still and the electronic compass takes over. It seems like a paper clip would throw it out of whack even. In my car the metal really did a number on the compass, but only when I was not moving. When moving it is very accurate.

3. Keys - I will admit having back lit or lighted keys would be nice. I will get used to button placement soon and will be able to do everything blindfolded but I have fumbled the past few nights looking for some caches.

Overall I am very happy with the unit. I sent the Garmin Dakota 20 back. It was only $20 more than the PN-40 so price was not a deciding factor. I found this unit was just way simpler without a touch screen and the fact the Garmins come with no maps at all gave this one an edge.

I bought this because of all the good reviews I saw. I guess if you want something that is close to accurate, doesn't pick up all that good and is hard to ues it is a good choice.

My nuvi 550 GPS picks up signal faster and is more accurate than this. The maping software is very deep but very hard to use.

I bought the DeLorme hoping to use it on hiking trails. I'm a day hiker. I wanted to turn it on at the start of a hike, have it identify where I was and show me what trails/roads were available from that spot. I wanted a "safety net" in case I got turned around on hikes. That ease of use is what I had come to expect from a GPS, because I use a Garmin unit in my automobile and frequently take it with me when I travel, domestically and overseas. For the record, I bought this unit because of the detailed maps, which are clearly superior to what I saw on the Garmin "hiking" units.

It comes with TopoUSa maps, so you have to load them on your computer, you have to learn that software, you have to download the maps for particular areas you plan to travel, you have to figure out how to tell it you're hiking (not driving, boating, etc.) There is no default to limit the device to hiking trails.

The instructions are not adequate for the complexity of the device, and I have not been able to find additional, detailed instructions on line.

Perhaps if this weren't my first "hiking" GPS I would be more forgiving, but it's complexity makes it essentially useless for a day hiker.
